About Us

Rooted in Regeneration. Built on Integrity.

Guided by Experience. Boavida Organics is a regenerative farm dedicated to producing honest, nutrient-dense food through ecological farming systems that prioritise soil health, biodiversity, animal welfare, and long-term sustainability. We believe that exceptional food begins with exceptional soil — and this principle guides every decision we make. Our systems are closed-loop, pasture-integrated, and designed to work with the natural ecology of our land.

Our Founder

Matthew Berry — A Two-Decade Journey in Organic & Regenerative Agriculture

Boavida Organics is led by Matthew Berry, whose involvement in organic farming began in the early 2000s. Notably, the project was known as Boavida from its earliest years in KwaZulu-Natal, where both the farm’s identity and philosophy first took root.

From 2007 to 2012, Matthew operated the original Boavida organic farm in KwaZulu-Natal, supplying the Shongweni Farmers Market through his farm stall. During these years, Boavida built a strong reputation for:

  • chemical-free vegetables
  • heirloom produce
  • pasture-raised eggs
  • ethically raised livestock
  • flavour-driven farming
  • reliable weekly food baskets
  • authentic, integrity-based food production

Boavida in KZN was not a side project — it was the foundation of the brand, philosophy, and farming methods that define Boavida Organics today.

A Lifelong Passion for Heirloom Vegetables

From the beginning, Matthew was fascinated by heirloom vegetables, particularly heirloom tomatoes. Their astonishing range of colours, shapes, flavours, and global genetics became a central part of the Boavida identity in the KZN years. Over time, this passion expanded into:

  • heirloom peppers
  • traditional beans
  • heritage squashes
  • diverse root crops
  • leafy greens
  • African landrace varieties

This commitment to biodiversity shaped his core farming philosophy: preserve genetic diversity, honour flavour, regenerate soil, and grow food honestly.

Boavida Estate — The Evolution of Boavida

In 2015, Matthew relocated to Boavida Estate in Hartebeeshoek, bringing with him:

  • the entire Boavida seed bank he had cultivated over many years,
  • the regenerative systems developed in KZN,
  • the pasture-based livestock methods he had refined,
  • and the original Boavida philosophy of soil-first, animal-respecting farming.

The move to Boavida Estate marked the continuation and expansion of a long-established agricultural journey — not the beginning of a new farm.

Boavida evolved into Boavida Organics, a natural progression into a broader, deeper, and more integrated regenerative model. The vision remained the same, the principles remained the same — only the scale, capacity, and ecological complexity expanded.

Closed-loop Farming

Our Core Philosophy

Regenerate the Soil

Healthy soil is the foundation of nutrition. We build soil through:

  • compost
  • organic matter recycling
  • multi-species integration
  • minimal tilling
  • zero synthetic chemicals
  • microbial enrichment
  • continual cover and living roots

Stronger soil equals stronger plants, stronger animals, and stronger families.

Respect the Animals

Every animal on the farm is raised outdoors, on pasture, in sunlight, with natural forage, movement, and space. We use no confinement systems, no hormones, no growth stimulants, and no industrial production forcing. Our livestock are ecological partners — not production units.

Protect the Ecosystem

Boavida Organics is a closed-loop system where:

  • vegetables
  • chickens
  • pigs
  • ducks
  • rabbits
  • compost
  • soil organisms
  • water cycles
  • veld and pasture rotation

All work together to regenerate the land. Nothing is wasted, and everything is cycled intentionally.

Grow Food Honestly

We follow seasonal rhythms. Vegetables and animals grow naturally, at their correct times and speeds. We never chase artificial supermarket-style consistency. This produces food that is richer in flavour, higher in nutrients, and more aligned with nature.

What Makes Boavida Organics Different

A Closed-Loop Regenerative System

Boavida is not a commercial vegetable farm. It is a living, integrated ecological system designed to restore soil health, regenerate land, and produce nutrient-dense food.

Multi-Breed Heritage Livestock

We raise heritage and landrace livestock that perform naturally outdoors:

  • Mixed-heritage laying hens producing colourful eggs
  • Heritage × Broiler chickens for slow-grown quality
  • Duroc × Kolbroek × European Boar pigs for darker, marbled pork
  • Hardy duck lines
  • Regenerative rabbit breeding stock

Every animal is selected for ecological function and flavour — not industrial efficiency.

A Genuine Farm-to-Family Relationship

Our scale is deliberately limited. Everything is produced by hand, with integrity, and delivered directly to our customers. You always know where your food comes from — and how it was raised.

The Boavida CSA — Our Flagship Programme

Launching in January 2026, our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programme is limited to 25 founding households.

Each weekly basket includes:

  • 1 dozen pasture-raised eggs
  • 1 whole 2 kg pasture-raised chicken
  • 1.5 kg of premium pork chops
  • 7–10 heirloom vegetables grown in living soil

All slow-grown.
All regenerative.
All ethically produced.

This CSA reflects the highest expression of the Boavida philosophy: clean food, grown with integrity, delivered directly to families who value real nutrition.
