Pasture-Raised Pork
Slow-Grown • Outdoor-Raised • Naturally Marbled • Regeneratively Produced
Boavida Organics produces premium pasture-raised pork from a hardy, veld-adapted genetic line. Our pigs live outdoors, grow slowly over around 10 months, and play an essential role in the farm’s regenerative system. The result is pork with deeper flavour, natural marbling, and excellent cooking quality.
Genetics Chosen for Flavour and Hardiness
Unique combination of our herd
Our farm is home to a carefully selected range of heritage and traditional breeds, each chosen for its unique qualities, adaptability, and contribution to ethical, regenerative farming. Rather than relying on a single commercial type, we work with multiple breeds to preserve genetic diversity, support animal health, and produce food with exceptional flavour and integrity. Each breed brings its own strengths—whether in temperament, foraging ability, growth pattern, or meat and egg quality—and is raised in a way that allows it to express its natural characteristics. Below, we introduce each breed individually, sharing its origin, traits, and role within our living farm system.
Duroc Pigs
Duroc pigs originate from the United States, where the breed was developed in the early 19th century and quickly became prized for its hardiness and exceptional meat quality. Today, Durocs are renowned worldwide for their rich marbling, deep red meat colour, and natural tenderness. Calm by nature and well-suited to outdoor, pasture-based systems, they thrive when allowed to forage, root, and grow at a natural pace. Raised slowly and ethically, Duroc pigs produce pork with superior juiciness, texture, and depth of flavour—heritage-quality meat that reflects both animal welfare and regenerative land stewardship.
Kolbroek Pigs
Kolbroek pigs are an indigenous South African breed with a history that dates back to the early Cape settlement period, making them one of the country’s true heritage livestock breeds. They originated from pigs brought to the Cape by European settlers in the 18th and 19th centuries and subsequently adapted to local conditions through natural selection. Kolbroeks are exceptionally hardy, well suited to outdoor and pasture-based systems, and known for their ability to forage efficiently while thriving on diverse, low-input diets. Their pork is richly flavoured, with excellent fat quality that lends itself to slow cooking and traditional methods. Raised respectfully and allowed to grow at a natural pace, Kolbroek pigs represent resilience, heritage, and flavour deeply rooted in South African farming traditions.
European Boar
European boar refers to traditional European wild boar and heritage boar lines that originate across continental Europe, where they have been present for thousands of years as both wild and semi-domesticated animals. These boars are known for their strength, hardiness, and robust genetics, making them well-suited to outdoor, pasture-based systems. European boar genetics contribute darker meat, firmer texture, and a deeper, more complex flavour profile, with excellent fat quality prized in traditional European charcuterie. When integrated responsibly into regenerative farming systems and crossed thoughtfully with heritage breeds, European boar lines enhance resilience, foraging ability, and meat character—producing pork that is rich, flavourful, and true to its ancestral roots.
Freedom by Day. Safety by Night. Naturally Superior.
Raised Outdoors With Natural Freedom
Our pigs live outdoors on pasture and veld, where they have daily access to natural forage, shrubs and roots, wallows, and a mix of shaded and open areas. This environment allows them to root, explore, and behave as pigs naturally should, resulting in healthier, calmer animals and superior-quality meat.
For safety and comfort, the pigs are brought into secure shelters at night, where they rest on dry bedding and are protected from predators and extreme weather. This balance of freedom and protection supports both animal welfare and consistent, high-quality production.
Pigs as Part of the Regenerative System
Pigs play an active and valuable role in Boavida’s regenerative farming system. Through their natural rooting behaviour, they help break compacted soil, incorporate organic matter, and prepare new areas for future vegetable beds. By cycling food waste back into the system, they reduce on-farm waste while strengthening soil structure and biological activity. Their presence supports long-term soil health, improves land resilience, and enhances overall biodiversity—making pigs not just livestock, but essential partners in regenerating the farm.
A Natural, Seasonally Adaptive Diet
Our pigs are fed in alignment with the seasons, drawing most of their nutrition from veld grasses and shrubs, roots, natural forage, vegetable offcuts, and browse found within their environment.
Supplementary feed is provided only when seasonal conditions require additional nutritional support, ensuring balance without forcing growth. No growth promoters or hormones are ever used. This natural, adaptive diet supports animal health, respects the land’s rhythms, and contributes to pork with depth of flavour and true integrity.
Slow-Grown for Superior Quality
Boavida pigs are raised for approximately ten months—far longer than commercially produced pigs—allowing them to mature at a natural pace. This slow growth supports proper muscle development and natural fat formation, resulting in deeper flavour, darker and richer meat, and excellent texture with reliable cooking stability. The difference is evident in both taste and kitchen performance. This is real pork, produced naturally, without shortcuts.
Why Boavida Pork Is Truly Different
Customers choose Boavida pork because it reflects a commitment to time, integrity, and regenerative farming rather than industrial shortcuts. Our pigs are slow-grown over approximately 10 months and raised outdoors on pasture, resulting in superior natural marbling, darker, richer meat, and exceptional flavour. Every step—from ethical animal care and land regeneration to heritage-style sausage and wors production—prioritises quality over volume. We use clean, natural seasoning that enhances rather than masks the meat, preserving its true character. What makes Boavida unique is this uncompromising approach: pork produced with care, respect for the animal and the land, and unwavering attention to flavour and quality.
