Pasture-Raised Broiler Chickens
Slow-Grown • Pasture-Fed • Ethical • Regenerative • Exceptional Flavour
Boavida Organics produces pasture-raised chickens grown slowly, naturally, and humanely within our closed-loop regenerative farming system. These birds are raised outdoors on veld and pasture, allowed to express natural behaviours, and grown at their correct biological pace — resulting in exceptional nutrient density and deep, authentic flavour.
Slow-Grown Birds With Natural Genetics
We raise two complementary broiler types depending on season and demand:
Heritage × Broiler Crosses (Preferred Primary Line)
Selected for:
• stronger bone structure
• slower, healthier growth patterns
• superior outdoor performance
• deeper flavour
• better fat quality
Standard Broilers
Used When Heritage Cross Numbers Are Seasonally Limited.
Even our standard broilers:
• are slow-grown
• raised outdoors on pasture
• fed lower-grain, higher-forage diets
• never pushed or forced
• grown to natural weight without industrial speed
This ensures consistent availability while maintaining ethical production standards
Freedom by Day. Safety by Night. Naturally Superior.
Raised on Open Pasture, Sheltered with Care
Our broilers enjoy life outdoors on the pasture. They roam open fields, bask in sunlight, and munch on insects and greens. This allows them to move freely, scratch, and explore, which helps them build strong muscles and natural fat distribution.
At night, we ensure their safety by bringing them into secure housing. This keeps them dry, protected, and calm. Each morning, they are released to forage naturally once again. This approach ensures they enjoy the best of outdoor living while being safe from predators at night.
Integrating Broilers Into the Regenerative Cycle
Our broiler chickens play a vital role in Boavida’s regenerative farming system. As they move across the land, they naturally deposit nitrogen-rich manure that improves soil fertility, strengthens compost systems, and supports living soil biology. Their constant foraging gently aerates the ground, while vegetable offcuts are returned to them as feed, ensuring nothing is wasted.
By integrating broilers into the broader ecosystem, we also support a balanced predator–prey relationship and overall farm resilience. This creates a true closed-loop cycle—chickens nourish the soil, the soil grows vegetables, vegetable offcuts feed the chickens, and fertility is continuously regenerated with zero waste.
Natural Diet (Low Grain, High Forage)
Our broilers enjoy a varied diet. They feed on pasture grasses and veld herbs. Insects and forage are also part of their meals. We include vegetable offcuts and mixed natural browse for diversity. If needed, we supplement their diet with grains based on pasture quality.
The exact mix of their diet is influenced by several factors. These include the condition of the veld, the availability of seasonal forage, nutritional analysis, and rainfall patterns.
We never use growth promoters or hormonal stimulants. High-starch finishing programs are not part of their regimen either. Our broilers' nutrition comes from the land, not a factory.
Slow Growth Equals Exceptional Flavour
Industrial broilers often grow too quickly, between 35 and 42 days. In contrast, our birds grow at a natural pace. They develop strong bones, proper fat distribution, and superior muscle integrity.
The difference is unmistakable on the plate: richer, deeper flavour, firmer texture, natural fat development, and dramatically better roasting quality. What you taste is real chicken—full-bodied, satisfying, and true to how chicken is meant to be.
Beyond “Free-Range”: Real Pasture-Raised Chicken
In South Africa, many so-called free-range birds still spend most of their lives indoors, are fed high-grain diets, grow at industrial speeds, and rarely experience true pasture.
Boavida broilers are raised very differently. Our birds live on pasture every day, forage naturally, eat real greenery, and are allowed to grow slowly while expressing their full range of natural behaviours. Integrated into a regenerative farming system, they contribute to the health of the land rather than depleting it. The result is not factory chicken with a free-range label—but real chicken, raised as nature intended.
