Our ducks are raised outdoors in environments that closely match their natural instincts, including wet and marshy zones, grass and water-rich areas, the edges of vegetable beds, and a mix of shaded and open spaces.

As natural foragers, they spend their days swimming, dabbling, grazing, and actively hunting slugs, snails, and insects. This behaviour plays an important role in keeping pest pressure low across the farm without the use of chemicals.

For their safety and well-being, ducks are brought into secure pens at night, where they are protected from predators and can rest calmly, remaining healthy and stress-free.

Ducks as Ecological Partners

Ducks play a valuable role as ecological partners within our regenerative farming system. Their natural foraging behaviour provides highly effective pest control, particularly in moisture-rich areas where they excel at reducing slugs, snails, and other soft-bodied insects. At the same time, their manure gently fertilises water-rich soils, supporting healthier root crops and leafy greens nearby.

Unlike chickens, ducks lightly disturb the ground, improving soil activity without damaging the structure. By encouraging balanced insect populations and supporting natural ecological cycles, ducks contribute meaningfully to biodiversity and long-term soil health—aligning seamlessly with regenerative farming principles.

Our ducks are fed in harmony with the seasons and their natural environment. The majority of their diet comes from foraging—grasses, insects, aquatic plants, and natural browse—allowing them to self-select nutrients as conditions change throughout the year. Supplementary grain is provided only when seasonal availability requires additional nutritional support, and never to force rapid growth. This seasonally adaptive diet supports robust health, reduces dependency on inputs, and contributes to clean, balanced flavour that remains true to nature.

At Boavida, our ducks are raised slowly and respectfully, without forcing growth or relying on intensive production systems. They are allowed to mature at a natural pace, spending their days outdoors where they can forage, move freely, and express normal duck behaviour. Clean living conditions, fresh air, and nighttime protection ensure low stress and strong overall health. This slower, ethical approach to raising ducks results in well-developed muscle structure, improved texture, and noticeably better flavour—meat that reflects both care and patience.
